Chronic or Degenerative Disorders
Chronic disabilities and degenerative disorders encompass a wide range of disorders including but not limited to: AIDS, asthma, cardiovascular condition, diabetes, Tourette Syndrome, seizure disorders, or sickle cell disease.
Chronic and degenerative disorders are ongoing and unpredictable. They can cause health difficulties resulting in unpredictable schedule changes and a need for varied and changing accommodations. An assigned DRC specialist will work with each individual to determine which accommodations/services the student may need at any given time and to help the student learn how to deal with this unpredictability.
Commonly Used Accommodations
- Tape recording lectures
- Approved notetaker on an as-needed basis
- Approval for a one to three day extension on homework, papers, and exams when the student is unable to attend class due to their disorder
- Rescheduling of exams missed due to hospitalization
- Consultation and recommendation to Housing Office for appropriate accommodation in residence halls
Required Documentation
- Chronic or Degenerative Disability Disclosure Form completed by the student's treating clinician within the past six months of applying for services. Documentation must be updated annually from the appropriate licensed professional.
