Documentation Information

In accordance with federal laws and guidelines, acceptable documentation must be submitted to the DRC before appropriate accommodations can be determined and put in place. Documentation should be submitted only to the DRC, and should not be included in submissions to Admissions or other university offices. Please be assured that all medical, psychological, or disability documentation and related confidential requests are kept at the Disability Resource Center. Northeastern University will not release information regarding a student's diagnosis or documentation without that student's informed written consent.

To be eligible for accommodations, a student must submit recent documentation that includes a diagnosis of a disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The need for accommodation changes over time and from setting to setting. Therefore, students' initial evaluations often do not address their post-secondary needs. Also, the laws that govern disability accommodation differ at the post-secondary level. Because of these differences, a prior history of accommodation does not, in and of itself, warrant the provision of a similar accommodation. The DRC seeks to ensure consistency in evaluating requests while at the same time carefully exploring each individual situation.

To set up accommodations and services, the student must first meet with their assigned DRC Specialist to determine what is appropriate. Accommodations and services are individually determined, based on the functional limitation(s) that are identified by the diagnostic evaluation. Accommodations cannot conflict with the essential components of a course or degree.
