Housing Policies & Procedures
The learning environment and residential living are central to the Northeastern experience. The Disability Resource Center and the Center for University Life at Northeastern University work in collaboration to provide reasonable accommodation in the Residence Halls. Students requesting housing accommodations through the Disability Resource Center must do so in addition to following all other housing procedures.
Students needing accommodation in the Residence Halls must register with the DRC. To begin this process, please complete the Housing Request Form. Documentation supporting a request should be submitted to Disability Resource Center via fax, mail or delivered to 20 Dodge Hall. Please understand that submission of this form and supporting documentation does not guarantee a specific request will be granted, but rather, will assist in evaluation of potential reasonable accommodations.
The Disability Resource Center thoroughly considers each request when reviewing documentation and recommendations. The DRC seeks to ensure consistency in evaluating requests, while at the same time carefully exploring each individual situation. To aid this process, requests should include:
- Documentation of the condition or need that is the basis of the request
- A clear description of the recommended housing accommodation
- An explanation of how the request relates to the impact of the condition
- Possible alternatives if the recommended accommodation is not available
The DRC requires documentation in order to accurately and equitably evaluate requests based on substantially limiting medical, psychological, or disability related conditions. Documentation consists of an evaluation within the past six months by an appropriate professional that relates the current impact of the condition to the request. Documentation must be submitted either by a full neuropsychological evaluation or a completed Chronic or Degenerative Disability Disclosure Form, or Physical/Mobility Disability Disclosure Form, or a Psychiatric Disclosure Form. Documentation must be updated annually from the appropriate licensed professional. Please be assured that all medical, psychological, or disability documentation and related confidential requests are kept at the Disability Resource Center.
As appropriate to the condition, documentation should include:
- The current impact of (or limitations imposed by) the conditions
- Treatments, medications, devices or services currently prescribed or used to minimize the impact of the condition
- The expected duration, stability, or progression of the condition
- The credentials of the diagnosing professional
In addition to the basic requirements listed above, recommendations from the treating professional are welcome and will be given consideration in evaluating a request. Recommendations should:
- Provide a clear description of the recommended housing accommodation
- Connect the recommended accommodation to the impact of the condition (clearly stated diagnosis)
- Offer possible alternatives to the recommended accommodation
- Include a statement of the level of need for (or the consequences of not receiving) the recommended accommodation
All requests should be initiated at least four weeks prior to scheduled housing assignments. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the Disability Resource Center each semester that accommodations are needed (prior to signing up for housing).
